CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The following morning at breakfast, the talk was all about the mission.

“I don’t care what Linda says, Anna, you did a fantastic job,” said Connie, cutting into her eggs.

“For goodness’ sake,” hissed Patricia. “Why did you have to go and open your mouth?”

I looked up from my plate. Up until that point, I had been enjoying my breakfast.

“Go on, you might as well tell me. What did Linda say?” I asked.

“It doesn’t matter,” said Connie.

“Yes, it does,” I said. “You brought it up and I have a right to know.”

I waited for someone to speak. Instead, the others exchanged anxious glances.

I laid down my fork. “Well?” I demanded.

“You’re right, you should know,” said Maria at last. “Linda’s saying that you bungled the mission.”

“What?” I stared at her.

“She said you didn’t have proper control over your team, and that’s why Carol attacked the machine gun. You waited too long before leaving, we could all have been killed, and if she’d been in charge, Frances wouldn’t have died.”

I took a deep breath. “Anything else?” I asked.

“No, that’s about it,” said Maria, eyeing me with some misgiving.

I stood up, pushing my chair back loudly. “I’ve had enough of this,” I told them. “I’m going to have it out with Linda.”

“Anna, think before you —” Jennifer began, but I was in no mood to listen.

I spied Linda at a table in the corner and strode towards her, determined to give her a piece of my mind. I was halfway across the dining room when Judy intercepted me.

“The Wing Commander wants to see you, ma’am,” she said.

“What?” I said, stopping in my tracks. “Now?”

“Yes, ma’am. Right now,” she continued. “He was most insistent.”

This rather took the wind out of my sails. There was nothing for it but to obey the summons from the CO.

“Oh … right, well, I suppose I’ll come then.”

“Follow me,” she said, rapidly leading the way out of the dining room.

As we walked along the corridors, I was still feeling extremely miffed, but my initial anger began to dissipate. What if what Linda had said was true? What if Frances’s death really was all my fault? What if I wasn’t fit to lead the flight?

We reached James’s office, and Judy ushered me in and closed the door behind us. Seated at the meeting table were James, Henry and Gloria. It was time to face the music.

“Anna, please have a seat,” said James pleasantly, indicating a chair on the opposite side of the table.

I saluted and sat down with my hands clutched in my lap.

“No need to look so serious,” said James. “We’re not going to bite.”

I smiled faintly, but the situation was making me nervous, particularly after what I had just heard at the breakfast table. Was this going to be an inquisition?

“We would like you to tell us how the mission went from your perspective. I’m sure you will have some valuable insights,” James said. “So, how did it go?”

“From the beginning?” I asked.

“That would be a good place to start.
